Q: Are all assisted living and retirement living communities alike?

A: No. Assisted living and retirement living communities vary greatly, even within SMC. At SMC, we're proud that each of our communities is unique and a reflection of its locale. We believe that unique people deserve exceptional communities, designed with these individuals and their desired environment in mind. This holds true for everything from the architecture of the building, to the food choices offered, to the SMC professionals who care for our residents. We strive to offer the best independent assisted living and memory care living services in each location.

Q: Are new residents required to pay a security deposit at the time of move in?

A: In most of our communities, no security deposit is required. The only up-front fee required by most of our communities is a processing fee. Because this fee varies by community, check with the community of your choice for more information. To locate a community near you, click here. (processing fee not applicable in all communities).

Q: Can I bring my own furnishings to my apartment?

A: Absolutely. This is your home and you should have all the comforts and furnishings to which you're accustomed. SMC residents enjoy decorating their own apartments and entrances to add their own unique personality to their homes.

Q: Can I bring my pet to SMC?

A: We know that pets can be an important member of the family. Most SMC communities allow residents to have pets in their apartment for a nominal, one-time fee. Be sure to check with the community in your neighborhood.

Q: Do SMC communities allow smoking?

A: We are sensitive to the health needs of all of our residents, so SMC communities are designated as non-smoking. Some of our communities offer dedicated areas where residents and guests are free to smoke.

Q: How do I pay for the living accommodations and services at SMC?

A: SMC residents’ expenses are either paid for privately, or through a third-party source such as a long-term care insurance policy. We can help you with your financial planning when you visit SMC, and we can assist you with long-term planning after you move in.

Q: I'm told that assisted living is designed to help people "age in place." Does that mean that a person can continue to live at SMC even as they begin to need additional services?

A: "Aging in place" is a common industry term that, unfortunately, can potentially mislead those interested in assisted living. You should thoroughly question any assisted living community that tells you that a resident can live at the community forever, even if their needs increase. In fact, the community may not be able to adequately meet the resident's needs for the rest of his or her life, or state regulations may restrict the community's attempt to do so. At SMC, we offer independent assisted living and memory care living programs for those with memory impairments. In the assisted living communities, we offer different levels of care designed to meet our residents' changing needs. This allows us to continue to serve residents as their needs increase. However, each state in which we operate regulates the level of services we can provide in an assisted living community. Should one of our residents develop needs that require services beyond those allowed by state regulations, we will assist that resident and his/her family in finding the best location for the resident's needs.

Q: Is living at SMC truly like living at home?

A: There's no place like home. However, at SMC we strive to provide the most home-like setting possible. From the comfortable décor and furnishings, to the stimulating programs, fine dining and flexible transportation, we incorporate all the comforts and more convenience than you can find at home. Over the years, many residents have told us that living at SMC is better than living at home, as we take many of the burdens of home ownership off of their shoulders.

Q: What are SMC's visiting hours?

A: When you live at an SMC community, it's no different than living at home—you and your guests are free to come and go as you please.

Q: What are the terms of SMC leases?

A: Except in the most isolated circumstances, our communities offer month-to-month leases and accommodate short-term stays.
